The main illnesses that lead people to a gradual loss of the renal function and the need of hemodyalisis treatment or renal transplants are: nephrites, inflammations of the kidneys that can become chronic; pyelonephritis, infections of the kidneys that involve pus and bacteria; long term high blood pressure; diabetes and other systemic illnesses; also polycystic kidneys and other congenital illnesses that evolve for renal insufficiency.
The acute nephrites generally attack children and young adults after a sore throat or a skin infection. Approximately 15 to 30 days after these infections people start to swell, show symptoms of high blood pressure and dark urine due to the hematuria (blood in the urine) in consequence of the inflammation in the renal filters (glomeruli). Prompt treatment of the mentioned infections will prevent the appearance of the nephrite that can become chronic. If the disease becomes chronic the patient will show blood and proteins in the urine, and generally slow deterioration of the renal function. Therefore, after the nephrite episode a urine exam must be done to check if the cure was accomplished.
Women due to the anatomy of their perineum are more inclined to urinary infections. These generally are only present in the bladder, but when it becomes a repetitive process they can develop for renal infection, called pyelonephritis. The urinary infections of repetition in newborns might be caused by congenital defects of the urinary tract. An ultrasound or ray-x investigation is needed to detect these problems.
Around 50% of the people above 50 years old suffer from high blood pressure and must measure it at least every 6 months; the long term high blood pressure, usually present for more than 10 years, can lead to a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), cardiac hypertrophy (increase of the size of the heart), cardiac insufficiency and chronic renal failure (the kidneys start to work less). Therefore, the blood pressure must be controlled through a low-salt diet and medicine. The medicines must be taken daily. The medicine taken today does not make effect in the next day. This is the reason why the medicine must be taken daily and how often recommended by your doctor. In addition, tobacco, high cholesterol, obesity, lack of exercises and stress are conditions that lead to cardiovascular complications including heart attacks. Diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for approximately 50% of the patients who need renal hemodyalisis.
