The Pro-Kidney Foundation offers a medical residency program in partnership with São José Hospital. There are 4 residents every year. A part from this important specialization course the Pro-Kidney Foundation offers internships in Psychology and Nutrition in partnership with the Faculdade Catarinense de Ensino.
The Pro-Kidney Foundation of Santa Catarina’s program of Medical Residence in Nephrology, done through a partnership with Municipal São José Hospital of Joinville, is recognized by the Ministry of Education and Culture and by the Brazilian Society of Nephrology. It offers a complete two year program for professional academic formation and offers four annual vacancies. The prerequisite is one year of Medical Clinic.
The Pro-Kidney Foundation services of Nephrology are located in its own headquarters, at Life Center in the Regional Hospital Hans Dieter Schmidt.
The nephrology clinic has an educational ambulatory covering nephrology clinic, high blood pressure, dialysis, and renal and pediatric nephrology transplant. Around 15 to 20 adults and children a day are interned. Weekly the nephrology interventional department makes invasive procedures as renal biopsies, implantation of catheters for hemodyalisis and peritoneal dialysis are also performed in the clinic. An annual theoretical program with seminars on clinic and pediatric nephrology reviewing main subjects is provided as well as weekly multidiscipline meetings discussing clinical nephrology, dialysis and renal transplants. Meetings of renal anatomo-pathology with evaluation of laminas plate and clinical cases in associated service also take place regularly in the nephrology clinic.
There are 163 patients suffering from chronic renal insufficiency in hemodyalisis treatment in three units which also offer treatment to patients with infectious illnesses as hepatitis and AIDS. Hemodyalisis machines with ultra filtration control and transmembrane pressure, variable sodium and continuous hemodyalisis are found in the Intensive Care Unit of associated hospitals.

More than 420 transplants have been carried out until June 2005 with 94% general patient life expectancy and 87% implant in first the two years after the transplant. There is a waiting list of more than 160 patients coming from different Brazilian states. Own Soroteca (Soro bank). The Pro-Kidney Foundation has a daily transplant clinic with a multidiscipline team that includes nephrologists, surgeons, nurses specialized kidney disorders, psychologists, nutritionists and other graduated professionals.
To complement the learning process, the Pro-Kidney Foundation of Santa Catarina has a partnership with the Pathology Center in which doctors specialized in pathological anatomy conduct weekly meeting to study the history of renal biopsies done in house. In the ICUs of the associated hospitals (1 neurological, 2 generals and 1 pediatric), acute renal patients that need traditional, slow or continuous hemodyalisis, peritoneal dialysis or any other urgent dialysis procedure are taken care of.
The residency keeps a theoretical course with weekly lessons on the most common subjects found in the daily clinic, as well as carries out seminars, lectures and case studies on nephrology and other topics. A weekly administrative meeting teaches the residents how to practically manage a hemodyalisis unit. English courses and Information Technology classes are available for the residents as an additional to the residency program.
The Pro-Kidney Foundation offers the residents a multidiscipline team of highly qualified teachers which include nephrologists, surgeons, urologists, nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, and occupational therapists in order to provide an integral learning experience.
Joinville has 400,000 inhabitants, and it is the biggest city of Santa Catarina state. It is extremely well located and only 30 minutes away from the sea (São Francisco do Sul) and 30 minutes from the mountain range (Estrada Dona Francisca) which takes to the cities of Campo Alegre and São Bento do Sul. Joinville has four Shopping Malls, several movie theaters, a convention center that accommodates more than 15.000 people in which many plays, shows and games take place. The climate is temperate for the most part of the year with average temperatures of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.
