Joinville is the pioneering city and leader in the achievement of renal transplants in the State of Santa Catarina. The first surgery was carried out in 1978 in the São José Municipal Hospital with a corpse kidney in Maria of Souza Assumpção of 55 years of age. She lived for another eight years after the surgery and died due to lymphangitis. The first transplant with a live donor was made in Adele Bolomini from Jaraguá do Sul.
Adele Bolomini - 25 years after her first renal transplantation. In March 2006, Adele received a second transplant because the first transplanted kidney was rejected by her organism. Currently, Adele Bolomini is doing well.
Until 30th April 2006, 507 renal transplants have been performed and this number has been increasing every year. Approximately half of the transplants are carried out with a kidney donated by members of the catarinense community. This number has also been increasing yearly. In the first 10 years of the Pro-Kidney Foundation around 100 transplants were performed, and after that this number has doubled for every 5 years. It is important to point out that the improvement was also qualitative, and today the life expectancy in two years is higher than 90% for implant and 94% for the receiver.
The Pro-Kidney Foundation offers a specialized clinic only for patients who need renal and pancreas transplants. This clinic carries out more than 1000 consultations per year and is composed of surgeons, urologists and nephrologists trained in Brazil and abroad. Among the staff members the Pro-Kidney Foundation also has nurses specialized in renal transplant, psychologists with more than 10 years of experience, nutrition department, and social assistants.
The objective of this clinic in the pre transplant period is to prepare the candidate patient for the surgery, as well as his family, aiming the success of the renal transplant. In the post-transplant period the main goal is to have the patient following the right instructions and to prevent complications. This is important for the maintenance of working function of the implanted kidney, and consequently a better quality of life for the patient. The ambition of the Pro-Kidney Foundation for 2004 in the area of renal transplants is to carry through about 50 surgeries and start with pancreas transplants. If this goal is reached the Pro-Kidney Foundation will remain among the biggest transplant centers in Brazil. Interested people in having a renal transplant at the
